Weeks Of Constant IBS

by Siān

What can one do?

What can one do?

Hi every-one,

We all know that IBS is hard to talk about, even to family, and especially on something as public as a website. But the point of IBS-Life was for us to show that we were real faces, real people, with real problems and that we did not see IBS as shameful or embarrassing. We will read all blogs and respond to comments, so please never feel that you are alone.

We do monitor all comments to keep this site a friendly place, and will not tolerate inappropriate content, but if IBS impacts your life in any way, whether you are a sufferer or have a partner or friend who suffers IBS, please fell free to share your experiences. This will help every-one who reads, since we can know we are not isolated.

We at IBS-Life will regularly contribute, but we wish to spread the awareness of IBS and help one another to endure it, together.

I would like to share the fact that since before Christmas I have had a long, painful, nauseating bout of IBS which made me perfectly miserable and very tired.

I get up in the morning early (5.15 a.m.) to make Kevin a flask of coffee, a cup to drink and pack his lunch for work. He uses the bathroom himself for ten minutes before coming downstairs.

During that time, while I make his coffee and myself a cup of tea, I am struck by stomach cramps and the urgent, very, very urgent need to use the bathroom. Sometimes I literally cry. There is only one bathroom in this house and I am terrified that I will not be able to use it in time. This is a horrible start to the day and has lasted weeks now. It is stressful, painful and often leaves me feeling sick. I have experienced this before, and been to the doctors, but they can do nothing and eventually it eases.

If any-one is in the same situation, or suffering similar symptoms, please know that I fully understand and sympathize.

Take care

Thank-you :)

Thank you very much for your suggestions of staying in bed, Anonymous. I wish I could, but since I prepare the coffee and pack my b/f's lunch, I have to get up. It just seems fair, as I am not working, not to send some-one off in the cold and dark while I lie in bed.

It is not quite so bad at weekends, perhaps because I am always the first up and know there is no real rush to have to get to the bathroom.

the bed's the thing
by: Anonymous

You poor thing. I wanted to offer up that, in my experience, my IBS symptoms tend to subside while I am lying down. When I have been in houses with only one bathroom and have been desperate to get in there, I have found that simply lying down slightly curled up on my side will calm the spasms a little and allow me to stave off the eventual for just a few minutes longer. You might try heading for the couch or the bed the next time this hits you. Better yet, are you able to just stay in bed for those ten extra minutes while he's in the bathroom? It's the getting up and getting moving in the morning that sets your bowels into action. I'm curious whether you could control the timing of your mad morning bathroom dash simply by controlling when you rise out of bed.

Thank-you for commenting.

Hi there, and thank-you for commenting. It is always good to know there are other people who understand, although I sympathize with each and every one.

Travel is one thing that I have to plan very carefully with IBS, and it does put a terrible block on what I do, how I travel and where I go (and of course, how far.) And the stress of thinking about such things does indeed only make the IBS worse.

Thank-you so much for taking the time to comment.

Take care,

You're not alone...
by: Gemma

I know how you feel. I sometimes suffer with the same kind of urgency, although it doesn't tend to strike first thing in a morning. Usually about 30-45 minutes after eating breakfast when I'm on my way to work on the train. I've always made it to work, but still have that fear that one day I won't. Luckily my train journey is only 15 minutes. I would like to move house one day further away from the city, but my IBS and the fear of a longer train journey puts me off. I'm just too scared to take that risk every day. My IBS is definitely worse when I'm stressed/anxious, but it does sometimes strike out of the blue. Like you, I also find myself getting very tired. I think that's mainly linked to the stress and anxiety.

I think this IBS diary is a great idea by the way. I hope people can get support from it by knowing that they're not alone.
