Symptoms of Panic Attack
Article by Rick
Symptoms of Panic Attack, are extremely unpleasant when they occur, I know, I've had my fair share of them. They are certainly not uncommon among sufferers of IBS, and are quite often the trigger-mechanism or catalyst that leaves so many IBS sufferers virtually house-bound. Although this article talks about the symptoms of Panic Attacks, it needs to be understood that Panic Attacks are actually a behavioral condition, rather than an actual illness, so describing them as having 'symptoms' is technically inaccurate, (although for this article I will still continue to refer to them as symptoms.) 'Symptoms' are what a doctor would use to diagnose an illness. What are generally perceived as symptoms during a panic attack, are by-and-large nothing more than physical manifestations of the extreme thoughts running through one's mind during the course of an attack.
There are a huge variety of symptoms and every person's experience will be slightly different, but the more commonly recognized symptoms of a panic attack include: - Palpitations of the heart
- Rapid or pounding Heart Rate
- Churning stomach (often accompanied by a feeling of needing the bathroom)
- Feeling Nauseous
- Perspiring
- Feeling light-headed or dizzy
- Trembling
- Feeling like there is a lump in the throat (Globus Hystericus)
- Feeling a sense of unreality, like you are in a bad dream.
- Rapid breathing
- Pins and needles in the face, fingers and toes - often leading to the cramping-up of these extremities if the breathing is rapid and uncontrolled. (Hyperventilating)
This list is by no means exhaustive, and you may well experience other symptoms not mentioned here. During a panic attack, you may feel as if you are in mortal danger, or that perhaps you are having a heart attack (panic attacks can often be mistaken for heart attacks by passers-by or people witnessing the event), but rest assured you are in no danger. As far as I am aware, nobody has ever died of a panic attack.
This article focuses mainly on the symptoms of Attacks, but Sian has written an excellent
'Tips for Panic Attacks' article.
She has also included a wider list of Panic attack symptoms in her personal story called
