Surviving with IBS in school

by Anonymous

I've had IBS since 2004 when I started high school. It was real bad. Lots of bloating, gas and pain on the left side of my stomach. I could write a whole page of the embarrassing situations I've had to endure. I even started to have panic attacks in class when my stomach hurt. Now my drugs of choice are SSRI Cipralex and antipsychotic Zyprexa. Using drugs is kind of scary to me but together they have gotten rid of maybe 60% of my symptoms. I was even able to go back to school so I guess it's worth it. I also run and swim every day, which helps. I'd like to quit Zyprexa though so now I'm trying Rifaximin and peppermint oil capsules. Let's see how they work.

drugs

I'm with Chris on that drugs should be the very last resort on treating IBS. And for me it was. But if it's come to that, you should be very careful with them. I actually started having psychosis -symptoms from the SSRI. That's how I found Zyprexa though.

Previously I was completely healthy other than having occasional panic attacks caused by the IBS symptoms.

PS. My doctor wouldn't give me Rifaximin and peppermint oil capsules didn't really work for me.

Are these really the answer?
by: Chris

Hi,
though I don't know all your circumstances, as a long term IBS sufferer myself I do find it disquieting that a medico will prescribe things such as antidepressants to young people like yourself as a first line of defence.

There are many ways to try to get on top of this condition and I feel these should be tried properly before resorting to drugs. There's no quick fix or "one size fits all approach" though.

There's lots of useful information on this web site and most of it I can vouch for personally through trial and error over the years. You should be able to find your own answers here.

The answer to my IBS was Whey Protein
by: Norman Simpers Jr

I fully understand your problem having suffered from IBS for well over 30 years since age 11. Just in the last 10 months I found my own personal "cure". WHEY PROTEIN. Please watch my Youtube Video "Beat IBS with Whey Protein"
Everyone's body is different so what works for me may or may not work for you, but my greatest hope is that it will offer you the new pain free life that it has given me.

Thank you for your post
by: Siân@IBS-Life

I am glad that you have found something that has helped you with your IBS. It sounds as if these drugs treat the anxiety side of IBS, which is where I try to tackle it from, as I am sure that stress accounts for 90% of my IBS symptoms. It is good to hear that you are able to do certain things that many IBS sufferers cannot. Thank you for this entry and take care.

I found peppermint oil very good; there have been some studies done on it quite recently regarding its use in treating IBS and they seemed to be very favorable.
