My experience

Dear All,

I am suffering from IBS for the past 17 years. Mine was more diarrhea oriented and gets worse when I am stressed. I had to empty my bowels 5-6 times a day and more if I am very stressed. It was very uncomfortable and I was having low concentration.

I tried every medicine available, visited many doctors, but it came back with a vengeance.

Then I tried this: I decided that I will condition my bowel habits. I decided to empty my bowels only once a day. I suppressed the other urges. Yes, first week was very difficult, you have to pass gas etc., I would run to toilet, but I will not empty my stomach. And after the first week, it got better and better. Now I got just once a day, have better concentration etc. The quality of life really improved. Yes, there has been occasional urges, but generally it improved by itself. It is more than 2 months since I tamed my problem.
:)

I thought I will share my story so that others could benefit from it.

Regards,
Sam.

Sure about that?
by: Chris

I'd just like to say that I am not sure this is a good idea.

I used to do that a long time ago out of necessity to stay in meetings at work, etc. I now have a condition called diverticulosis and a severe case at that. I was compared to someone twice my age (I was 44 then). I attribute this to all those times I just "held on". When I told my GP about this he was horrified. Same goes for gas. His words "fart freely, doctors orders"!

Diverticlosis in itself may not be a problem unless an infection sets in and then you're off to hospital. Put me down for 2 occurrences of that! I understand that the antibiotics are less effective on this if it happens more than twice and major surgery may be the only option.

Just my 2 cents worth.
