An impartial review of Imodium, by an IBS sufferer…

Article by Rick

What is Imodium?
The chances are, anyone who has suffered with IBS for some time, particularly IBS-D (Diarrhea dominant) will probably know what it is.

If you don't, then it is an extremely popular anti-Diarrhea medicine that seems to work quite well.

Its effectiveness and results vary from person to person, but it is generally considered one of the more effective short-term medications, certainly among the IBS fraternity.

As someone who has alternating IBS-C (constipation dominant) and IBS-D, it has been, on occasions, a life-saver.

I have personally found the best results kick-in about 6 hours after taking it, where for the rest of the day, the constant thoughts about being near a bathroom become much less dominant, and I find I can sometimes roam outside of my comfort zone without stressing about it too much.

I usually take one 2mg tablet as early as possible, and then a furher one or two later on after each bathroom visit.

Unfortunately for me there is a price to be paid, the next day.

Constipation and/or increased bowel unpredictability usually follows for a day or two afterwards, which makes it a great medication for a single-day event, but pretty useless for anything longer.

The generic name for the medicine is Loperamide and it is usually sold in 2mg tablet form.

As I said, Loperamide has been, on occasions, a life-saver, but, there is the optimal word – "on occasions".

Loperamide is NOT a permanent or long-term solution to IBS.From what I understand, its long term use is not recommended. It should not be taken continuously

Cost
I have also recently discovered that it can be a lot cheaper if you buy it under its generic "unbranded" label "Loperamide" in 2mg tablets.

If you are in the US, I believe you can get it off-the-shelf in this unbranded format and only pay a few dollars for a bottle of 350 capsules.

Over here in the UK (or "rip-off Britain" as we lovingly like to call it!) the branded version costs about £4 - £5 ($9USD) for a packet of 12 capsules!

However, I have recently discovered a US seller on eBay importing the 350 capsule bottles of the unbranded version from the US to the UK for less than £10 including postage.
