I'm 17 and I now have no life.

by Shauni
(united kingdom)

I am fed up!
First my IBS started in the last year of school,(2 years ago now) I coped with it at first i didn't think anything of it, until the stress of my GCSE's started, I was very worried about going to my exams but thank god, I lasted through them, the next challenge was my first year of collage, it was ok at first until it all started again, so I decided to take my self of the course. I tried lots of different courses since then, they all ended up the same, I had too much time off, because i was worried about leaving the house. At this point my mother decided I was lazy! so i had to explain to her what was going on, she still doesn't quite understand, nobody can really, but now i just want to know how I am meant to go to college without having to quit again, i just want to be a normal teenager and go out with my friends but instead I'm stuck in the house most of the time!!!!

Fed up!

there is hope with ibs
by: Anonymous

Hi, I've had ibs for 21 years now. However, this my not be for everyone, but I've been on Celexa for 5 years now. The ibs is always going to be there. But the difference is that there is no pain, just mild bloating from time to time. And bowel movements are a lot more regular, and controllable.

Moreover, I've been to Paris, Spain, the U.K. with IBS. I'm lucky in that I have IBS with constipation. That means that Celexa balances that out because Celexa causes diarhea. Also, I eat a huge amount of yogurt and cherries. That helps a lot.

So don't let IBS take over your life. You can have a 90% quality of life. That's pretty good! I'm going to the mall now for some yogurt!!!

IBS Aged 17
by: Anonymous

I am 17 and my symptoms of IBS started just a year ago, but have got worse and have affected my life in a big way. I now hate going to school and I had started stopping going out at all because of my symptoms. But I am trying to adopt the attitude that we cannot let IBS control our lives all the time, so I have decided not to quit school. I am struggling through each day, sometimes having to go in late and things like that. I hate going in but I know I am not going to let IBS ruin my education. I have exams in the next few weeks and I am not sure whether I will be able to cope with the IBS but I am just praying. I managed to get through my GCSEs last year, but I had to leave the hall to go to the loo many times. Nowadays my symptoms are embarrassing, painful and stressful. I never seem to be able to relax whilst I am in the company of others. I am so glad that there are forums like these around.

I am so sorry, Shauni
by: Siān@IBS-Life

Thank you for posting.
I began to get symptoms young too, and it affected my entire life -- what I might have done career-wise, travel, even every-day decisions.

Perhaps your mother could look at the website to understand what you are going through. We have no cures, unfortunately, but we do have suggestions as to what people may try to help themselves. Each person is different, so it may be a matter of going through many diets, remedies etc, and tackling stress and anxiety (which is a repeating cycle with IBS, the more stressed you get, the more the IBS worsens!) until you find something that can help.

take care

Siān
