I'm 11 and live with IBS

by Savannah
(Gulf Shores AL)

Hi, my name is Savannah. I am suffering with IBS. Possibly an ulcer.(getting an upper GI Oct.15)I have chronic loose stools and have no idea how to fix them.I have tried Miralax and yogurt. NOTHING works.... I have trouble at school listening and everything because I am so worried and focused about my gastero track and my bowels. I have SEVERE GAS!!!! I have gas a lot. I have farted in class a couple of times because it felt like every time i tried to hold it in to save embarrasment, it felt like someone was stabbing me with a pen in my lower intestines. When I fall asleep or (TRY) to fall asleep every night, a knife is going through my intestines very slowly. Maybe I did swallow I knife>....Sure feels like it though :( Ever since my parents got divorced in 2007, I have been living with this, have seen many doctors, and it gets worse every night. I have been to a mental hospital to see if the problem was mental. I was diagnosed with "anxiety" I went to my gastero doctor 3-4 weeks later and was diagnosed with "IBS" But my doctor odered a GI to rule out ulcers and tumors............... ****SAVANNAH****

Ibs :/
by: Becca

Hey I'm 12 and I find ibs imbarassing too. I don't pass wind, I get mostly diarrhoea and rarely constipated. Don't let it get you down there are worst things in life. The way my mum helps me is by thinking "what could be worse?" and we come up with wacky ideas about what could be worse.

I am eleven also and am struggling with the same issue
by: Autumn

Dear savannah. I just read your article and the same thing is happening to me every day I feel like something is stabbing me the pain. Gets worse when I have milk cheese and yogurt .anyway some days I feel like pulling my hair out because of stress .my parents don't think I need to go to a doctor but the pain is unbearable . I had som cheese in a casserole a few. Days ago and constantly found myself running to the bathroom .I can't even go on feildttips or enjoy. Almost anything. Some things that have helped me. And might help you is keep a food journal say how you felt. What you ate that is what I did. I also calm myself down by listening to some music. About. The sleep problem that happens to me almost every night. And I can't sleep because shivers run down my back my gut hurts. I feel like barfing And have headaches. I hope this will help you 

gas-related IBS
by: Anonymous

I received blood tests for food allergies - I have intolerances to dairy, egg, shellfish, baker's and brewer's yeast and sunflower seeds/oil. Dairy and egg can also lurk in a lot of rubs/sauces so beware. I eat very plain, baked fish/chicken/meat with steamed vegetables. I was treated for candida (yeast) of the GI tract by a naturopathic doctor but knowing the food allergies helped more than the treatment for candida. I also avoid sugar and sweeteners like the plague. My IBS is severe gas predominant also and avoiding these as well as limiting carbs really helps me. Stress is a huge factor, would recommend continuing to see someone to help you through these issues. When you feel bad, ensure you're getting enough sleep, eating right and exercising (which is a good stress reliever). Hang in there!

I'm 53 and I have IBS too
by: Russell

Have you been tested for allergies to Dairy products? If not do it now, or at least read up on lactose intolerance and how to deal with it. It's one of the major causes of gas for people and they don't even know they have it.

Certain vegetables also can cause gas, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, asparagus and beans as well, not green beans or peas but most other kinds of beans.

Get a broad test for allergies like lactose intolerance then try adding more soluble fiber (fiber from fruits). Add some Flax seed (good insoluble fiber if you are not allergic to it) to 1 cup of orange juice, 1 banana and 1/4 fresh pineapple and 1/3 cup plain yogurt and put it in a blender. Its a great smoothie for me and I need to watch which fibers I take in or I get the same symptoms.

Keep a food diary, write down what you eat at each meal and see how you are affected. Watch out for too many fats from processed foods, like chips and cookies and things like that.

Small amounts of real butter or lard in cookies are better than the trans-fats in store bought ones. So homemade foods are better for people with IBS

Fruits are the best snacks and some even make you feel better after you eat them. Like pomegranates and pineapples.

Yes stress is a big part of IBS too. Everybody feels anxiety. For some of us, even the smallest things can cause us to worry and worry, which causes our IBS to act up. There are some medications for this but they can contribute to loose bowels.

I live in Canada where tests are paid for by our national health plan. I'm saying this because the next part of this post concerns some history and our local laws are probably different than the laws where you are.

There are records that show that for five thousand years the Chinese people brewed tea from Marijuana to relieve abdominal distress. I can legally purchase Marijuana for this where I live, if I need to. When I looked up the other available treatments for IBS here in Canada Paregoric was one of them. Paregoric is made from Opium, its an old medicine but used the same way the Chinese used the tea. Today codeine takes its place as a pain killer but doctors don't prescribe it a lot. It slows down your intestines and makes you constipated.

I don't like taking pills so I drink the tea for the pain if I need to. I eat pineapple and pomegranates, blueberry, purple grapes and other fruits but those are the ones that actually seem to help. Oh yea, water-melons and bananas they're great for when I get dehydrated. The fiber is good soluble fiber and help with the diarrhea

Hope you can find your solution. It can get better especially if we can stop worrying about things.
