Is Cranberry Juice Helpful for IBS as well as UTI's?

Article by Sian

While Cranberry Juice is probably best known to be an effective preventative - and possible cure for Urinary Tract Infections, it seems also to be highly digestible for people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Since I suffer both IBS and UTI's, I have been drinking it every day for over a year. Whereas some fruit juices, such as orange, tomato, grapefruit, make my stomach feel acidic and some can give me cramps and diarrhea ( especially tomato juice ), Cranberry Juice, despite the tartness of it's taste, causes me no problems.

Cranberry - and also Blueberry Juice - are recommended by doctors for people who sufferer recurrent UTI's. Why? And does it have any bearing on IBS?

Tests have shown that a component within the Juice prevents bacteria sticking to the wall of the bladder and urethra, which in turn prevents the growth of these bacteria into an infection. This may have something to do with a large polymeric compound found only in Cranberries and Blueberries. The commonest cause of UTI's is e-Coli, which is present in fecal matter. This may explain why people who are IBS-D prevalent may experience more UTI's, since if they are unable to clean themselves properly, or their stools are particularly loose, they may spread the bacteria from the rectum to the urethra. It is also important always to wipe front to back when using toilet tissue. However, a regular intake of Cranberry Juice, seems to prevent the bacteria from taking a hold, and it flushes out in the urine.

Cranberries - A Superfood.

Cranberries, both dried and as a juice, are one of the Superfoods, containing polyphenol antioxidants, which are bring researched with regard to health, including that of the cardiovascular system, immune system and in cancers. There is some evidence to suggest that drinking it may help to ward off the influenza virus, and that it can help to eliminate and prevent the formation of kidney stones.

Trials into the juice and it's benefits continue, but it is definitely shown to be helpful among women who suffer UTI's.

For people with IBS, it provides a drink which is very healthy and for me at least, digestible. In the UK, the most popular brand is Ocean Spray, which contains 25% juice. naturally the higher the concentration of juice the better. Cranberries can also be bought dried and in tablet form. ( for those who do not like the taste of the juice or dried fruit )
