Librax to help with IBS Symptoms.

Librax is a medication that GP's sometimes prescribed to treat stress-related IBS.

It contains a benzodiazepine (Valium is a benzodiazepine) and also a drug which may help to alleviate the cramping and pain of IBS as well as decreasing stomach acidity and may be used in conjunction with medications that treat stomach ulcers.

Librax seems to be a two-pronged approach to treat IBS which is exacerbated by anxiety or stress or when stress and anxiety are the direct cause of your IBS.

At time, as in my case, I was given Diazepam (Valium) many years ago for anxiety and then an anti-spasmodic (Colofac) to treat the stomach cramps and pain of IBS. I was already on medication for gastric reflux and acid stomach. I therefore have never been prescribed Librax, as I already take Valium.

Any-one prescribed this medication should check with their GP that they are not already on medication for anxiety, and if they are, whether Librax may be taken with it. It is important to remember that all GP's see many patients and do not always look through what medications you are taking, so it in your best interest as a patient to be aware of their own medications and to ask questions if they believe that two prescribed drugs may contraindicative.

All medications containing a benzodiazepine can cause drowsiness, and one can also become habituated to them, so that doses may cease to be effective after a time. If you are prescribed Librax and it ceases to work, you should return to your GP who may increase the dosage or offer other suggestions.

Librax is a prescribed drug in the the US, Canada and Europe, and should always be taken only if prescribed by a medical practitioner. I have seen people mention Librax on various sites over the last year and it does appear that it has benefits for those who suffer anxiety-induced IBS, or those people who become more worried and stressed when they have an attack of IBS.

This medication is used along with medications that treat stomach ulcers. This combination product contains 2 medicines, chlordiazepoxide and clidinium. Chlordiazepoxide belongs to a class of drugs known as benzodiazepine anxiolytics. It works by relieving anxiety. Clidinium belongs to a class of drugs known as anticholinergics. It may help symptoms of cramping and abdominal/stomach pain by decreasing stomach acid, and slowing the intestines.
